How to Fight the Signs of an Ageing Deck

Ageing happens to all of us, even exterior timber. Being constantly exposed to the harsh Australian sun, high UV or pouring rain, timber decks need consistent maintenance to keep them looking schmick.

Each year, set some time aside to give your deck some TLC. A yearly three step maintenance routine is the best way to extend the life of your deck. However, if you notice any cracks, mould, fungi, splinters, or discoloration, you will need to give your deck immediate attention.

Spring is generally a great time to do this as the weather is starting to warm up but it’s not too hot yet! If you live in a hotter climate, such as North Queensland, you may want to look at completing this before spring.

Three-step yearly maintenance routine:

Step 1: Exfoliate

Get rid of degraded timber fibres and dirt on the surface by cleaning with a deck cleaner. Mix with water and scrub the timber with a deck brush. This will remove mould, and reinvigorate weathered, grey timber. It preps the deck with a smooth finish for a new coating. Once clean, allow to fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Nourish

Now that the deck is fully dry after cleaning, you can coat the surface. Remember not to shake the can, stir it gently but thoroughly with an up and down scooping motion to prevent bubbles on application. Use a brush to cut in around the edges, then apply product with a lambswool decking applicator two or three boards at a time following the grain of the timber. The applicator ensures there are no blend marks or streaks. Let the first coat dry for at least one hour before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Rejuvenate

Once your first coat has dried for at least one hour, apply a second coat following the same steps in Step 2. Once you’ve applied the second coat, let it dry for at least eight hours before walking on it and putting your furniture back on the deck. Coatings can take up to seven days to fully cure. Moreover, we always recommend that you read and follow the instructions on the back of the product label to get the best finish.

And that’s it! You’ve successfully rejuvenated your deck and brought it back to its glory days. Grab a drink and admire your beautifully fresh-looking deck!
