How To Paint A Stained Timber Door

Think you can’t paint a stained timber door? Think again. Like with any project, painting a stained timber door is possible with the right advice and choosing the right products. That’s where we come in. Here’s how you can prep and paint your stained timber door with ease.

What you need:

  • Dulux Aquanamel Semi-Gloss (in your chosen colour)
  • Dulux Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • Mini roller
  • Paint brush
  • Screwdriver (to remove door and handles)

How you do it:

Step 1:

Remove the door from its hinges and take off the handles. We recommend placing the door in an open space that will allow you to move freely around it while prepping and painting.

Step 2:

Sand both sides of the door including the edges to dull the shine from the stain or varnish. You do not have to remove the stain completely. The goal is to slightly etch the surface so that the primer will adhere correctly.

Step 3:

Apply 1x coat of Dulux Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer to one side of the door and along the edges. Allow to dry before turning the door over and applying 1x coat to the other side of the door. Allow to dry.

Step 4:

Apply 2x coats of your chosen top coat colour to one side of the door and the door’s edges. We are using Dulux Lexicon Quarter in Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss. Allow to dry between coats. Once dry, flip the door and apply 2x coats to the other side of the door, allowing to dry between coats.

Step 5:

Finally, once the top coat is dry, rehang the door on its hinges and fix the handles back in place.
