How To Paint Over A Dark Wall

If you’ve ever tried painting a light colour over a dark wall, you’ll know that applying an undercoat is an important part of the process. Why? Because it doesn’t allow the old dark colour to show through your fresh new colour.

But what if we told you… we skipped that step?

In this space, we went straight over deep green walls with a soft baby blue. No undercoat, no drama. Just the right product. Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide.

It’s secret? Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide provides ultimate hiding power due to concentrated levels of titanium pigment. And because it’s Wash & Wear, you can wipe away most marks with a wet cloth, meaning your walls will stay looking freshly painted for years.

But, before you rush off to your local Inspirations Paint store, there’s one thing to keep in mind. Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide covers most dark colours, not all. So, you’ll need to test if Super Hide is right for you.

Here’s how:

Step 1:

Apply 2x coats of Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide to a small patch of your wall. Allow to dry between coats.

Step 2:

Once dry, assess if the original dark colour is still visible through the 2 coats. Use different lighting to make sure you’re happy with the finish.

Next, you can begin the transformation process (AKA our favourite part… painting). For this space, we are painting the top half of a wall throughout a hallway and loungeroom space. The dark green and lack of natural light makes this space feel dark and cold.

That’s why we are using Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide Low Sheen in Blende Blue to add some much-needed lightness to these rooms.

Here’s how we did it:

Step 1:

We first assessed the walls to determine if any repairs needed to be made before painting. These walls were in great condition, so we could go straight to the masking.

Step 2:

Next, we masked around the doors, windows and VJ panel half wall with masking tape, leaving the tape fanned out to minimise the clean up needed once we finished painting.

Step 3:

Then we applied the first coat of Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide Low Sheen in Blende Blue to the walls, first cutting in around the edges before rolling.

Step 4:

Once dry, we applied the second and final coat of Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide Low Sheen in Blende Blue to the walls. Again, we first cut in around the edges before rolling.

Step 5:

Finally, once the second coat was dry, we removed the masking tape and admired the amazing transformation.

With Dulux Wash & Wear +PLUS Super Hide, refreshing your dark walls with lighter tones is easier than ever. Just test, paint, and enjoy your brighter space.
