How to Refresh Adirondack Chairs
Adirondack chairs might just be the most comfortable timber chairs ever made are and they’re no stranger to an Aussie backyard. But after months of harsh (and unpredictable) Aussie weather, even the sturdiest timber chairs can start to look worn and weathered. The good news? With a few simple steps, you can bring them back to life just in time for summer. Here’s how:
Step 1: Clean
Start by removing any surface dirt, dust or grime from your Adirondack chairs. A pressure washer works wonders, but a strong garden hose will do the job too. Let the chairs dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Sand
Once dry, assess the chairs to see if the timber grain has been raised and needs a sand. If so, give the timber a light sand with 120 grit sandpaper. Be sure to wipe away any dust from the chairs before moving on.
Step 3: Wet Down
Before applying a timber cleaner, wet the chairs thoroughly with a hose. This helps the cleaner work evenly across the surface.
Step 4: Timber Clean
Apply Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner using a stiff brush or broom. Scrub the entire chair and avoid spot cleaning to prevent uneven results. Leave the cleaner on for 10–15 minutes.
Expert Tip: Work out of direct sunlight and keep the timber damp during the cleaning period for best results.
Step 5: Wash
Pressure wash the chairs thoroughly to remove all traces of cleaner. Then, allow them to dry completely. This step is crucial before applying any stain or oil.
Step 6: Coat
Finish by applying your chosen timber oil or stain. We recommend Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil for Adirondack chairs. It protects against moisture, UV damage, and everyday wear while enhancing the timber’s natural beauty. For this project, we went with Spotted Gum.
Refreshing your Adirondack chairs doesn’t just make them look great, it extends their life and keeps your outdoor space inviting all year round.
