How to paint an outdoor planter box

Looking for a fun weekend project that adds a touch of magic to your backyard? A spray-painted outdoor planter box turned fairy garden is the perfect way to combine creativity with greenery (not to mention it gets the kids outside). With just 3 simple steps, you can transform an ordinary plastic planter into a whimsical home for herbs, veggies and fairy friends. What’s more, you can customise this project to any interest – a dinosaur garden, a home for Bluey and her friends or a home for the classic garden gnome.

What You’ll Need:

  • Plastic planter box
  • MTN Australia Universal Plastic Primer
  • Your chosen colour spray paint (we’re using MTN Australia 94 Spray Paint in Pastel Mint)
  • Soil
  • Your choice of herbs and veggies
  • Fairy garden decorations

How You Do It:

Step 1: Prime

Start by spraying an even coat of MTN Australia Plastic Primer over the outside and inside of the planter box. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Paint

Now for the fun part… colour! This is where you customise your planter. Choose a shade that suits your garden’s vibe or will add to the fairy magic you’re wanting to capture. We’ve gone with the dreamy Pastel Mint from MTN Australia’s 94 range.

Spray your chosen colour in light, even layers until you’re happy with the coverage. If applying multiple coats, let each coat dry before adding the next.

Expert Tip – It is always best to build up your spray paint in layers. This is the best way to achieve a flawless finish without drips.

Step 3: Decorate

Once the paint is dry, fill the planter with soil and plant your favourite herbs or veggies. Then, sprinkle in some fairy magic. We’ve got a tiny house, some miniature furniture and sparkling stones. The result? A garden that’s as enchanting as it is practical.

A DIY fairy garden is more than just a decorative project. It’s a creative escape that brings charm and personality to your outdoor space. With a splash of colour and a sprinkle of imagination, you can turn a simple planter into a magical mini world that brightens your garden all year round. So, grab your spray paint and start creating. Your fairies are waiting!
