It’s not every day your teenage daughter starts high school. So, to mark this milestone, we’re transforming this stark, white room and upgrading it with the power of paint.
We have chosen to embrace dusty pink, adding warmth and softness with a VJ panel feature wall and a repainted Fantastic Furniture tallboy (not to mention some amazing home décor choices).
Here’s what we did to achieve this epic bedroom makeover:
Part 1 – VJ Panel Feature Wall
There’s a reason VJ panels are a staple of interior design. They are timeless, stylish and give a space some personality. But when it comes to painting them, it’s important to follow our advice to ensure they look as good as possible when you finish.
What you need:
How you do it:
Step 1: Repair
Inspect your VJ panels to determine what needs to be repaired. For small holes, use Selleys Spakfilla Rapid. Apply to the relevant areas, allow to dry and sand smooth. Wipe away any dust before giving the wall a clean with Selleys Sugar Soap so that the surface is ready for paint.
Step 2: Prime
Apply 1x coat of Dulux 1Step Prep Primer to the walls. Start by cutting in to each groove before rolling. Allow the primer to dry completely.
Expert Tip – When cutting into each groove, load the brush with paint, fill the groove and then feather the paint out. This will ensure there is not a thick line of dried paint on your VJs.
Step 3: Paint
Apply 2x coats of Dulux Wash & Wear in your chosen colour to the VJ panel wall. We’re using Dulux Ellen. Again, start by cutting in to each groove before rolling. Allow your first coat to dry before applying the second.
VJ panels are a trendy way to a decorative finish to a space, but they are time consuming to paint. Cutting in the right way on VJ panels goes a long way to helping you achieve a smooth finish. So, if you’re chasing a beautiful, smooth finish, do as we do.
Part 2 – Fantastic Furniture Tallboy
You don’t need to settle for bland flatpack furniture. Instead, with the right products, you can transform your melamine furniture with paint and enhance your home décor with ease. Here’s how we took a Fantastic Furniture tallboy and gave it a fresh new look with Porter’s Paint.
What you need:
How you do it:
Step 1: Sand
Scuff the surface of the tallboy with 120 grit sandpaper. This is essential if you want your paint to stick. Melamine is very smooth and without scuffing the surface, your paint won’t adhere to it. That means a poor finish that won’t stand the test of time.
Step 2: Prime
Like sanding, priming your surface is incredibly important when painting melamine furniture. Apply 1x coat of Dulux Precision Maximum Adhesion Strength Primer to the tallboy. Allow to dry completely.
Step 3: Paint
Apply 2x coats of your chosen topcoat colour to the tallboy. We’re using the beautiful soft pink Nude from Porter’s Paints in Aquasatin. This will give the tallboy a glossy, satin finish that will continue to shine for years to come.
If you’re sick of the same old white melamine furniture taking up space in your home, but don’t want to break the bank on more unique and fun pieces, paint is the answer.
