How To Paint Bare Gyprock

Whether your building, renovating or repairing, there’s a right way to paint your bare Gyprock to ensure a long-lasting, beautiful finish for your walls. And no surprises… it comes down to the prep.

Bare plaster is pretty absorbent, so painting directly onto the surface without sanding or priming could lead to an uneven finish (something nobody wants). In addition to this, painting without a primer could result in peeling or flaking paint down the road, meaning that you will need to prep and paint the wall all over again.

So, if you want to avoid these issues and make sure the paint in your home shines for years to come, here’s how you prep and paint bare Gyprock for a long-lasting finish:

Step 1:

Sand the Gyprock thoroughly. Using 120 grit sandpaper, sand the entire surface of the wall. This might seem like a waste of time (it’s a brand new wall after all), but trust us, a good sand goes a long way to giving you the best finish possible. Once sanded, wipe away any dust from the plaster with a microfibre cloth.

Step 2:

If you want your paint to stick, then you need to prime. Apply 1x coat of Dulux 1Step Prep Primer to the bare plasterboard. This is a great general primer around your home due to its mould resistance and stain blocking properties. Start by cutting in around the edges with a brush before rolling. Allow to dry fully before moving on.

Step 3:

Once the primer is dry, it’s time to paint. Apply 2x coats of your chosen top coat to the Gyprock, again cutting in around the edges with a brush before rolling. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second.

Now sit back and relax knowing that your wall is prepped, primed and painted the right way. You might even pat yourself on the back. We won’t judge. You deserve it!
