How to paint timber trims

Timber features can add warmth and character to a home, but over time, dated timber trims on walls, ceilings and windows can make a space feel tired and out of step with a modern interior. The good news is that with the right preparation and quality products, refreshing your trims is a straightforward project that can dramatically transform the look and feel of your home.

Whether you’re brightening up a single room or tackling a full home update, following a simple, methodical approach will help you achieve a smooth, professional finish. Follow the steps below to bring your home roaring back into the 21st century with confidence.

Here's what you need:

Here's how you do it:

Step 1: Prep

Sand the timber trims with 120 grit sandpaper. This step is essential for creating a slightly roughened surface that allows the primer to properly adhere. Take your time to sand evenly, paying attention to corners and detailed areas where old coatings may still be glossy. Once complete, wipe away any excess dust with a clean cloth to ensure a smooth base for the next stage.

Step 2: Prime

Apply 1x coat of Dulux Precision High Opacity Stain Blocker primer to the timber trims. Ensure even coverage across all surfaces, working methodically along the trim to avoid drips or missed spots.

Expert Tip - The stain blocking element of Dulux Precision High Opacity Stain Blocker primer is important as the timber will show through a regular primer, causing your trims to look yellow, not white as desired.

Step 3: Paint

Apply 2x coats of your chosen top coat colour to the timber trims. We are using Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss in Lexicon Quarter. Cut in around the edges with a brush before rolling with a mini roller. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second.

Updating your timber trims is a fantastic way to breathe new life into an older home, creating a lighter, more contemporary feel without the need for major renovations. With careful preparation and the right products, even a small update like this can have a big visual impact.
