How To Add Texture With Spray Paint

Turning a basic flatpack into a chic, custom piece that fits your space perfectly is not only a budget friendly way to upgrade your interiors, but it’s almost too easy with spray paint. It’s no secret we love a spray paint project. They’re quick, easy and always pack a punch. And what’s more, by using decorative spray paints, you can bring designer looks to your home at a fraction of the cost.

We’ve been loving the stone-texture trend in interiors, so we’re using the Dulux Spray Effects Granite Grey to transform a plastic IKEA stool into a unique and stylish faux stone side table.

Here’s what you need:

  • MTN Australia Plastic Primer Spray
  • Dulux Spray Effects Granite Grey
  • Your chosen top coat colour Dulux Spray Paint

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1:

Start by putting the stool together as per the IKEA instructions.

Step 2:

To ensure your paint sticks to the plastic stool, apply an even coat of MTN Australia Plastic Primer. This is the key to achieving a long lasting finish on your piece of plastic furniture.

Step 3:

Once the primer is dry, spray an even coat of Dulux Spray Effects Granite Grey. Apply the spray paint in several light coats (as opposed to one heavy coat). Remember, it’s much easier to add layers of paint than take them away. The texture builds the more you spray, so if your desired finish is very textured, keep spraying!

Step 4:

Now for the colour! This is where your creativity can shine. We used Dulux Antique White USA to give our stool a more subtle texture that blended well with our coastal aesthetic. Spray your chosen top coat evenly over the textured base, again painting in light layers and allow it to dry thoroughly.

And just like that you’ve got a low-effort, unique statement piece that fits your home and style without breaking the bank.
