We love a crisp white painted bedroom, but this coastal home was screaming for a refresh. For this, we’re revisiting one of our favourite trends in interiors and creating a bold half wall that leans into the neutral colour palette of the home. But there’s a twist.
To emphasise the colour and give the room some more personality, we’re also colour drenching the trims and the door, matching them to the half wall to create a seamless flow of colour throughout the space.
Here’s how:
Step 1:
Give your wall a thorough inspection. Repair any damage (such as peeling or flaking paint), clean the wall and sand.
Expert Tip – Prep is the most important painting step. Learn how to prep a wall before painting here.
Step 2:
Apply 2x coats of your chosen white to the top half of the wall. We’re using Porter’s Paints Eggshell in Popcorn. Start by cutting in around the edges before rolling. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 3:
Once the top half of the wall is completely dry, measure and tape the height you want for the half wall with masking tape. Work your way around the room until there is an even, unbroken line of tape.
Expert Tip – Don’t mark the wall with pencil. This might show through the paint and take you back to square one. Instead, using masking tape to measure your half wall, marking the tape with pencil if needed.
Step 4:
Using your chosen white, bleed seal the tape by painting over the bottom edge of the tape to prevent your chosen half wall colour from bleeding through. This is the key to achieving clean lines on your half wall.
Step 5:
Apply 2x coats of Dulux Wash & Wear in your chosen colour to the bottom half of the wall. We’re using Dulux Beige Royal. Again, start by cutting in around the edges before rolling. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 6:
Now for the twist. Apply 2x coats of Dulux Aquanamel in the same chosen colour to the trims and back of door. For us, this is Dulux Beige Royal. Allow the first coat to dry before moving onto the second.
Step 7:
Finally, once the paint it dry, remove the tape from the wall to reveal the bold half wall.
While it’s not colour drenching in the typical sense, this bold half wall with matching trims and door is a fantastic way to explore colour in your home without committing to a major repaint. And with the right home décor and furnishing, this is the easy way to achieve the fresh new look you’re after.
